Let’s not rush to condemn this terrifying work of art

Ate onde sei o filme ainda não chegou aos cinemas brasileiros,..., mas lá fora foi duramente criticado. Li algumas criticas e esta é a primeira que elogia o último filme do Lars von Trier. Vou seguir a recomendação e ver do que se trata.

Since the word "Antichrist" first appeared in the New Testament - particularly the letters of John - it has become a byword for evil. The word is on many people's lips again because it is the title of a controversial new film by the eccentric Danish director Lars von Trier.

The film has generated a torrent of sensational news reports and condemnatory comments. The sensationalistic coverage is unfortunate as Antichrist deserves more serious consideration, especially from religious commentators. Interestingly, von Trier became a Catholic some years ago. But today he probably lives somewhere on the fringes of Catholicism.

The controversy first flared at Cannes when the press audience booed Antichrist and many viewers came out upset at some of the sequences. Reporters who scented a story latched on to this. The film was quickly described as one of the most violent and disgusting films ever screened in Cannes. The immediate reviews were generally harsh and antagonistic. But later reviewers have suggested more objective ways of looking at the film. In this article I would like to follow this path.
